Historical highlights

The brick paved streets of the Historic Jeff Neighborhood are reminiscent of the days when horses and buggies transported Lafayette's early residents and merchants to their destinations throughout the young city. A brick carriage house, dating to the mid-1800's, is located on 12th Street.

The old Depot building, the present location of Neighborhood Housing Services, also lends its grace to the yesteryear ambiance of this unique area. The neighborhood's namesake is the Historic Jefferson High School building, a brick, two-story structure which once served as Lafayette's public high school. Located on the corner of Ninth and Brown Streets, the building was renovated and is now home to Ivy Tech College.

Other neighborhood features

The Historic Jeff Neighborhood is within walking distance of elementary and parochial schools, shopping and cultural attractions, including the Tippecanoe County Public Library and Wells Community Cultural Center.

Shopping along Main Street includes Stallard Pharmacy, located at 834 Main Street, and Main Street Mercantile, located at 1000 Main Street.

Neighborhood Association

This newly formed association is building pride in the Historic Jefferson Neighborhood. Such events as a clean up day, "Rake Up and Bloom", and the on-going porch light campaign promote "neighborliness" and safety.
